Terms of Service

Last updated 2026-04-22 · Effective immediately

These are the rules for using RunSpace. They're written to be readable, not to trap you. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to what's here. If you don't agree, don't use it.

01

Acceptance

By creating an account, signing in, or otherwise using RunSpace (runspace.cloud), you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you're using the service on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you have the authority to bind that organisation to these terms.

If you don't agree to any part of these terms, don't use the service.

02

The service

RunSpace is a self-hosted, privately operated chat platform. It is provided on an as-is basis by an individual — not a company. Features include direct messages, group chats, public channels, voice and video calls, file sharing, and a desktop client.

The service is provided free of charge. There is no premium tier, no advertising, and no data sales.

03

Accounts

Creating an account

  • You must provide a valid email address for verification.
  • You must be at least 13 years old, or 16 where that is the local digital-consent threshold under the GDPR.
  • You are responsible for choosing a strong password and keeping your credentials secure.
  • One person, one account. Don't create multiple accounts to circumvent moderation.

Account security

  • You are responsible for all activity under your account.
  • Notify us immediately at support@runspace.cloud if you suspect unauthorised access.
  • We may require additional verification (email codes, hCaptcha) for suspicious activity.
04

Acceptable use

You agree not to use RunSpace to:

  • Harass, threaten, stalk, or incite violence against any person or group.
  • Share child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or any content that sexualises minors. Zero tolerance — accounts are terminated and reported to appropriate authorities.
  • Distribute malware, phishing links, or attempt to compromise the service or other users.
  • Engage in spam, coordinated inauthentic behaviour, or mass unsolicited messaging.
  • Impersonate other individuals or organisations in a way intended to deceive.
  • Violate applicable laws, including those governing intellectual property, export controls, and privacy.
  • Circumvent moderation actions, trust scoring, or rate limits through alternate accounts or technical means.
  • Scrape, mirror, or redistribute service content without authorisation.
Hard line: CSAM, explicit threats of violence, and doxxing result in immediate termination without warning. We cooperate with law enforcement where legally required.
05

Your content

You own what you post. RunSpace claims no ownership of the messages, files, or other content you send through the service.

You grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, transmit, and display your content solely for the purpose of operating the service. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to technical backup retention periods.

Public vs. private content

  • Direct messages and group DMs are end-to-end encrypted. We cannot read them.
  • Public channel messages are readable by the server because they are posted to a channel visible to other users. Treat public channels as public.
  • Profile information (username, avatar, bio) is visible according to your privacy settings.

You are solely responsible for the content you post. Don't post anything you don't have the right to share.

06

Moderation

We reserve the right to review reported content, restrict accounts, and remove content that violates these terms. Because direct messages are end-to-end encrypted, moderation of private conversations relies on user reports rather than automated scanning.

What moderation looks like

  • Warning — for first-time or minor violations.
  • Temporary restriction — reduced rate limits, loss of features, or a cooldown period.
  • Suspension — account disabled for a defined period.
  • Termination — account permanently closed. For severe violations this is immediate.

Appeals

If you believe a moderation action was taken in error, you can appeal by emailing support@runspace.cloud. We aim to respond within 14 days. Appeals do not pause active restrictions.

07

Encryption & limits

RunSpace uses strong end-to-end encryption for direct messages, group DMs, and flagged uploads. This has practical consequences you should understand:

  • The server operator cannot read encrypted messages. We cannot retrieve lost messages on your behalf.
  • If you lose all your devices without backing up your keys, your encrypted history is unrecoverable.
  • Message delivery depends on your devices being online at some point after a message is sent.
No key escrow. RunSpace will never add a backdoor, key escrow system, or ghost-participant feature — and will never hand over what we do not have. If law requires it, we will shut the service down rather than compromise this.
08

Availability & changes to the service

RunSpace is provided without any uptime guarantee. The service may be unavailable due to maintenance, infrastructure issues, software bugs, or circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

We may add, modify, or remove features at any time. We'll communicate significant changes via the news page or in-app notifications when reasonably possible.

09

Termination

By you

You can delete your account at any time from settings. Deletion removes your profile, authored messages, device keys, and trust history. Some aggregate abuse-signal counters may persist in anonymised form as described in the Privacy Policy.

By us

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms, if your account is inactive for an extended period, or if continued operation of your account poses a risk to other users or the service.

On termination, your right to use the service ends immediately. Clauses that by their nature should survive termination (content ownership, liability limits, governing law) will continue to apply.

10

Disclaimers & liability

Plain English: RunSpace is operated by one person as a free service, provided as-is. I do my best to keep it running, secure, and private, but I can't guarantee perfection, and I can't be on the hook for damages beyond what's reasonable for a free, self-hosted service.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

  • The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
  • We don't warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure against all possible threats, or that data will never be lost.
  • Our liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the 12 months preceding the claim — which for a free service is zero.
  • We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under mandatory consumer-protection law in your jurisdiction.

11

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms over time. When changes meaningfully affect your rights or obligations, we'll notify active users in-app and update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Minor editorial changes (typos, clarifications) may be made without notice.

Continued use of the service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms. If you don't accept them, delete your account.

12

Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Sweden, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Disputes arising from or relating to the service will be resolved in the competent courts of Sweden, unless mandatory consumer-protection law in your jurisdiction provides otherwise.

If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full effect.
